Power Outage
Remain calm. In the event of a major, campus-wide outage, the UO has emergency generators that will immediately provide emergency power to selected areas of the campus.
Notify one of the following to report a minor, localized power outage:
- Campus Operations at 541-346-2319 Monday - Friday 7:30 to 4:30 or
- DPS at 541-346-2919 after-hours, weekends and holidays
Keep flashlights and batteries in key locations throughout your work areas.
In Case of a Major, Campuswide Power Outage:
- Remain calm. Provide assistance to others as necessary.
- Follow directions from DPS regarding any necessary emergency actions.
- If in doubt evacuate the building. While evacuating watch for persons with special needs and provide assistance if possible. See evacuation guidelines in this manual and contact DPS at 541-346-6666 for assistance if needed.
- Laboratory personnel should secure all experiments prior to evacuating. All chemicals should be stored in their original locations. Provide natural ventilation by opening all windows and/or doors. If this is not possible or natural ventilation is not advisable, evacuate the laboratory until the power is returned.
- Do not use candles or other type of open flame for lighting.
- Unplug all electrical equipment including computers if possible to do so safely.
- Do not use elevators.
- Emergency lighting for exit pathways will function for fifteen to thirty minutes following a power outage. In areas with poor natural light, evacuate promptly.

If People are Trapped in an Elevator
- Tell passengers to stay calm and that you are getting help.
- Notify DPS by pushing the red button located in the elevator and provide information over the speaker. Or, call DPS as at 541-346-6666.
- Stay near passengers until police or other assistance arrives, provided it is safe to stay in the building.
