NFPA 1600
The University Emergency Management & Continuity Program is based on upon the National Fire Protection Association's 2010 edition of the 1600 Standard on Disaster / Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs.
NFPA 1600 establishes a common, high-level set of criteria for disaster and emergency management and business continuity programs to develop, implement, assess, and maintain these programs. The programs address management, planning, prevention, mitigation, implementation, response, recovery, testing, and improvement.
Red Cross Ready Rating Program
The Red Cross Ready Rating Program is designed to help schools across the country get better prepared for emergencies. Below are the five cornerstone preparedness actions of the Ready Rating program.
The Red Cross Ready Rating program and assessment tool are the result of a comprehensive review of preparedness recommendations conducted by the American Red Cross National Office of Preparedness and Health and Safety Services, the national Ready Rating team, and the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council. All Ready Rating Program steps and recommendations are grounded in scientific research, best practices, and/or expert opinion from respected professionals representing multiple disciplines and perspectives.
The five cornerstone preparedness actions are:
- Commit to preparedness.
- Conduct a hazard vulnerability assessment.
- Develop an emergency operations plan and a business continuity plan.
- Implement the emergency response plan.
- Help the community get prepared.
Disaster Resilient University
The University of Oregon is a founding member of the Disaster Resilient University network. The mission of the Disaster Resilient University (DRU) network is to facilitate open communication, discussion, and resource sharing between university/college emergency management practitioners charged with making our campuses more disaster resilient. The goal of the DRU network is to provide a simple resource that can increase communication, coordination, and collaboration among universities around the world, which can increase the capacity of our campuses to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, continue operations during, and recover from natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other human-caused crises or disasters.
