Suicide / Psychological Emergency

Suicide is the eighth most common cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause of death among college students. Nationwide approximately 10% of college students seriously consider suicide every year.

Factors Which Increase the Risk of Suicide Include:

  1. Depression or other mental illness
  2. Alcohol or drug abuse
  3. Recent loss of a significant relationship
  4. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  5. Past history of a suicide attempt
  6. Academic failure or disappointment

Look for the Warning Signs

  1. Talking about killing oneself, ending it all, or death
  2. Giving away personal possessions and/or tying up loose ends
  3. Expressing hopelessness
  4. Taking life-threatening risks
  5. Gaining access to a means of suicide (guns, pills) or talking about a specific plan
